We are really excited to be welcoming your children into Year 5 this year! The children have all returned to school with a really positive attitude and we are sure that we will have a really successful year together. In line with our SHINE motto ‘Learn Together, Shine Forever’, we have chosen gemstone names for each class. In Year 5, we are known as the gemstone Sapphire.
A typical day in Year 4
When the children arrive, they’ll take part in a morning activity to ease them into the day. We then have Whole Class reading followed by an assembly. After the assembly, we have our English session before break time. After break, the children have English and then arithmetic practise or spellings. Then it’s lunch time. To begin the afternoon, we have a calming afternoon activity of either quiet reading or 100 club (times tables), followed by PE (on Wednesday) or a R.E.A.L Curriculum lesson.
Themes
Over the course of the year, we will be teaching three main themes. Within these themes, the children will be developing their knowledge, interests and skills to cover all of the curriculum areas. Additionally, our Ethos is rooted in our Christian values. These values permeate through our curriculum, behaviour and attitude toward one another.

Reading at home
We are putting a lot of emphasis on reading, so it would be great if you were able to hear your child read at least four times a week (or give them opportunities to read to themselves). We will be handing out reading records for you to complete at home when your child has read. These should come into school each day for the teachers and teaching assistants to check.
How else can I help at home?
In Year 4, pupils will complete the Multiplication Tables Check that the Government introduced. To support the children, we will be using a range of techniques to boost their confidence and skills. Any practise at home would also be helpful.
Homework – Maths & English (GPS)
Maths will be online on maths.co.uk with live marking.
English will focus on grammar, punctuation and spelling.
PE
Children in Year 4 will have their main PE lesson on a Friday afternoon with Mr Williams. We are asking for black or navy shorts or joggers, a coloured House top, pumps/trainers and their school jumper. Children will need to come in on a Friday wearing their PE kit.
Healthy snacks and water bottles
As we are a healthy school, the children will only be allowed a healthy snack at break times. Snacks include fruit, vegetables, fruit bars, fruit pots and yogurt sticks. Please can you make sure the children bring in their own water bottles each day (labelled) and take them home at the end of the day – please fill only with water.
Art t-shirt
To help with our art sessions, we are asking the children to bring in an old t-shirt (over-sized if possible), or apron, which they can wear whenever they are taking part in an art activity. These t-shirts will be kept in school throughout the year.
Showbie
We continue to use Showbie. The children all have individual logins for Showbie – see the front of your child’s reading record for log in details. If you have any messages for the school, please contact the main school office - Showbie is not checked for messages.
Finally, if you have any questions, concerns or would like to speak to any member of the Year 4 team, we are available at the end of the day and will be more than happy to support you with anything that you need.
Many thanks
The Year 4 Team
